Shanghai Covid trucking restrictions see sustained pressure on airfreight

Shanghai is back in business following a Covid lockdown but additional quarantine measures have resulted in trucking restrictions and staff shortages that are further battering airfreight supply chains.
Infections recorded following the formal end to lockdown in the city on June 1 has seen some areas return to Covid restrictions, temporarily restricting traffic and road access to trucks carrying airfreight in and out and around Shanghai. Covid testing requirements have also led to staff shortages. Beijing has also started mass testing again after an outbreak in the city. Read more here.

South Korean Military Moving Containers due to Truckers’ Strike

Members of the South Korean military were called out to drive tractor-trailer trucks in an effort to keep containers moving as talks in the week-old truckers’ strike broke down. Government and industry are calling on the truckers to return to work as reports grow over the impact on South Korea’s economy, manufacturing and ports. Read more here.

ILWU, PMA say they are not preparing for a longshore strike or lockout

The two parties involved in West Coast port labor talks on Tuesday issued a joint statement on Tuesday saying while talks are likely to last beyond their contract’s expiration on July 1, cargo operations would continue.
“Neither party is preparing for a strike or a lockout,” according to the update on contract negotiations from the Pacific Maritime Association and International Longshore and Warehouse Union. Read more here.

Feds Confirm Border Vaccine Mandate Remains in Place for Truck Drivers; Domestic Mandate for Federally Regulated Sectors Suspended

The Government of Canada announced today that the mandatory vaccination mandate at the land border remains in place for all travellers entering the country, including truck drivers crossing the border.
Although there are no changes to land border polices regarding the vaccine mandate, the federal government did announce the suspension of mandatory vaccination requirements for most domestic and international air travellers to assist with delays related to air travel. Read more here.

CBP Issues Guidance for Importers Related to Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act

The Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) was signed into law by President Biden on December 23, 2021.
The CBP has now released importer guidance to assist the trade community in preparing for implementation of the UFLPA that goes into effect on June 21.
This guidance document is intended to provide operational guidance to trade stakeholders and complements the UFLPA strategy guidance. Importers must comply with the importer guidance within UFLPA strategy, UFLPA, Section 3(b).
