    Air cargo shippers: ‘think about transport before you manufacture’

    Shippers will need to consider the lack of large aircraft during their manufacturing processes, warned one charter broker today.
    The loss from the market of Volga-Dnepr and Antonov’s AN-124s, as well as the world’s largest commercial aircraft, the AN-225, will create “a huge hole”, said Dan Morgan-Evans, global director cargo for Air Charter Service. Read more here.

    China’s Airlines Seek US Approval To Move Flights From Shanghai

    As China struggles to maintain its zero-COVID strategy, more details about the restrictions on international flights to Shanghai are emerging. As Simple Flying reported on March 15, China is diverting more than 100 flights away from Shanghai from March 21 until May 1. Read more here. 

    Air Canada Cargo opens new $16m cold chain facility

    Air Canada Cargo’s $16m cold chain handling facility at its Toronto Pearson International Airport cargo hub has been inaugurated.
    The project was undertaken to expand and enhance Air Canada Cargo’s cold chain handling capabilities for shipments such as pharmaceuticals, fresh food and other perishables. Read more here. 

    Russia moves to seize hundreds of leased aircraft

    Russian president Vladimir Putin has moved to effectively seize hundreds of aircraft currently operated by Russian carriers from foreign lessors.
    Putin on 14 March signed a law that allows the jets to be registered in Russia, in essence confiscating them from their overseas owners, retaliating against sanctions imposed by Western countries as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine almost three weeks ago. Read more here.

    Finally, some relief from supply chain bottlenecks for the besieged ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. In the first two months of 2022, the queue of ships waiting for Southern California berths fell, velocity of cargo moving through terminals increased and more boxes were unloaded at Southern California docks.

    Evergreen in for three more 24,000 teu ships at Hudong-Zhonghua

    Evergreen Marine has returned to CSSC-affiliated Hudong-Zhonghua with a new shipbuilding contract for the construction of three more 24,000 teu containerships.
    The Taiwanese carrier said it will pay between $160m and $190m per vessel, and a total of up to $550m. Delivery dates have not been disclosed for the latest order, which follows the contract for a similar pair in June 2021 and brings Evergreen’s 24,000 teu series at Hudong-Zhonghua to seven ships.     Wan Hai launches more India services as demand stays buoyant

    The trend for container lines – predominantly those operating in intra-Asia trades – to introduce new connections out of India to capitalise on the buoyant market is seeing further traction.
    The latest entry comes from Wan Hai Lines, an independent service connecting South China, Vietnam and East India, which may prove a boon to the export-import community in India’s south-eastern markets caught up in growing schedule reliability woes from fewer available connections.     CP issues 72-hour notice to lock-out TCRC-Train & Engine employees

    Canadian Pacific Railway Limited (TSX: CP) (NYSE: CP) has issued 72-hour notice to the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC)-Train & Engine of its plan to lock-out employees at 00:01 ET on March 20, 2022 if the union leadership and the company are unable to come to a negotiated settlement or agree to binding arbitration. Read more here.

    Truckers strike in response to rising fuel costs

    Truck drivers across Spain have begun an indefinite strike in objection to high fuel costs which self-employed drivers and small haulage firms are struggling with especially.
    Italian drivers have also taken strike action in addition to planning protests on 19th March. Similar action is being taken in Morocco where a 3 day strike is currently taking place whilst French truckers look to commence strikes from 21st March following various protests in the country.
