    Russia Warns Air Operators Of Erupting Volcano

    A major volcanic eruption in the “Ring of Fire” along the Pacific Ocean on Friday resulted in volcanic ash rising to an altitude used by commercial aviation, causing authorities to issue a notice advising aircraft to evaluate their flight paths.
    The explosion occurred on Bezymianny volcano at 05:38 on April 7th, in the Kamchatka peninsula of far-eastern Russia. Read more here.

    Hong Kong International retains busiest cargo hub top spot

    Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) retained its position as the world’s busiest cargo airport in 2022 despite the impact of Covid restrictions, according to statistics from Airports Council International.
    HKIA saw its cargo volumes fall by 16.4% year on year in 2022 to 4.2m tonnes as restrictions on crew hampered operations, particularly at combination carrier Cathay Pacific, which uses Hong Kong as its home hub. Read more here.

    LA and Long Beach longshoremen back at work

    Workers returned to work on Saturday after two days of intermittent strikes at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach in California.
    Unions have not agreed new pay terms since an old contract ran out on July 1 last year, making shippers uneasy about the prospects for industrial action. Read more here.

    ONE Eco Calculator launched

    Japanese containerline Ocean Network Express (ONE) has debuted its ONE Eco Calculator, which calculates carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from ONE’s operating vessels.
    With the ONE Eco Calculator, units are expressed as either tank-to-wake (TTW), a measure of emissions from burning fuel, which has been stored in a tank, or well-to-wake (WTW), a measure of emissions from fuel production, delivery, and use aboard ships. Read more here.

    Liner industry expect rates to climb through 2023

    The container shipping industry is hopeful of a better peak season this year and expects freight demand recovery in the Q2 of 2023, according to the recently published monthly container market forecaster for April by the online logistics platform, Container xChange.
    The container price sentiment index (xCPSI), a sentiment analysis tool by Container xChange that concurrently surveys supply chain professionals on their short-term price expectations, continued to show negative readings until mid-March. Read more here.
