    Forwarders furious over ‘monstrous’ rise in air cargo handling charges

    FORWARDERS have expressed anger at the latest round of air terminal handling charge increases, calling them ‘monstrous’, with one describing the hikes as ‘a joke’.
    WFS is the latest to unveil new charges for January, which, at Heathrow, include a GBP22.50 (US$30.35) Covid charge, with import fees for loose cargo set at GBP0.20 per kg. Dnata, which, like Swissport, publishes charges in April and October, is currently charging GBP0.18/kg, while Swissport is at GBP0.19. Read more here.

    Container freight rates from Asia surge to new highs – ‘it’s gone mad’

    Container freight rates from Asia continued to surge this week, reaching highs far in excess of long-term sustainable levels.
    Today’s Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) cumulative reading hit a new record of 2,311.71, representing a 162% increase on the same week last year. Read more here (login required).
    US east coast ports expand to handle traffic bypassing congestion in the west

    While the US east coast ports are in expansion mode, anticipating growth, the nation’s prime maritime gateway on the west coast remains choked with traffic.
    The congestion that has plagued the port complex of Los Angeles and Long Beach in recent months has got worse lately, with dwell times for vessels of almost a week, while on the docks containers pile up, slowing movement of boxes off the facilities. Read more here (login required).
    ONE Apus stack collapse losses expected to top $200m

    Shippers and forwarders with shipments on board the ONE Apus have been warned to expect General Average to be declared on the casualty.
    The 14,000 teu vessel suffered a massive container stack collapse en route to Long Beach after encountering heavy weather near Hawaii on 30 November. Read more here.
    Port of Long Beach goes on the record with another No. 1

    The Port of Long Beach on Wednesday joined the lengthening list of record setters by announcing it had marked its best November ever.

    U.S. maritime sector asks for US$3.5 billion in Covid relief

    In a joint plea to congressional leadership and treasury secretary Steven Munchin this week, the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) and other maritime transportation entities asked that US$3.5 billion in Covid-19 relief funding be made available for the U.S. maritime transportation sector. The groups cited “significant hardships” and “unique and unexpected challenges” posed by the pandemic. Read more here.
