    United Airlines Inaugurates Non-Stop Cape Town Service

    The Points Guy reports that flight UA1122 was the first time that any airline has operated a non-stop service from North America to the South African legislative capital.

    This seasonal operation currently departs Newark three days a week. It departs at 20:30 on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The journey takes 14.5 hours, arriving in Cape Town at 18:00 the next day. Read more here.

    Shippers: Liner low-sulfur surcharges are not ethical or transparent

    Shippers are furious that low-sulfur IMO 2020 fuel surcharges introduced by lines vary so widely, even between carriers offering the same service within an alliance.
    Container lines are acting with “opacity,” using “hidden formulas and no data backup” to calculate surcharges which they are using as an “opportunity to recover from low freight rates,” according to Jordi Espín, maritime policy manager at the European Shippers’ Council. Read more here.

    Powerful storm could delay Christmas deliveries in Pacific Northwest

    The Pacific Northwest is about to get a heaping helping of rain, snow and possibly icy weather for a couple of days. Starting tomorrow, Dec. 18, a potent low-pressure system and associated cold front will crash into the region, lingering at least through Thursday, Dec. 19. Truckers having to go over mountain passes will have to chain up. Those traveling the wet I-5 corridor may run into delays too.  Read more here.
    New Jersey’s owner-operator law in limbo for now, but risk remains

    New Jersey bills that would block trucking and other industries from using independent contractors are stalled, with the state legislature not scheduled to take up a vote on the issue through its current session.
    But those battling the proposed law caution that the risk of leasing trucks from owner-operator drivers remains and the bills could still move forward in the next few weeks. Read more here.

    US, Mexico quickly mend rift over North American trade deal

    Washington, DC — The United States and Mexico moved quickly Monday to defuse a dispute over President Donald Trump’s revamped North American trade pact.
    At issue are five labour attaches the United States intends to send to Mexico to oversee the Mexican government’s labour reforms. Those plans were revealed Friday when the U.S. published the implementing legislation for the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement — the legal text of the pact that the U.S. Congress will vote on. Read more here.
