    Less than a month after he declared to the World Economic Forum that India was open for business, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has raised import duties to their highest in three decades, setting the stage for a protracted trade war.  Read more here.

    Analyst says shippers switching to CP Rail as CN Rail service deteriorates

    Service on Canadian National Railway Co. has deteriorated to the point that clients are switching their cargoes to rival Canadian Pacific Railway, Walter Spracklin, a financial analyst for RBC Dominion Securities, said Thursday.
    But a spokesman for the Montreal-based company said many of the short-term service problems are weather related and the company is investing capital to address other longer term concerns.  Read more here.

    Rail Crunch Leaves Oil, Wheat Stranded Out on Canada’s Prairies

    A shortage of rail cars in Canada is leaving grain and oil shipments stranded on the Prairies, sending crude prices plummeting and leaving farmers in a cash crunch.
    The nation’s biggest railways haven’t been able to deliver enough cars after harsh winter conditions and as a sudden boom in energy production sparked a swell of demand. Read more here.

    CBSA System Maintenance Outages This Weekend

    Maintenance activities will cause the following system outages this weekend:
    CBSA eManifest Portal
    • Saturday, February 17 – 5:00 to 5:30 am ET
    • Sunday, February 18 – 5:00 to 5:30 am ET
    Users may experience a forced re-logon between 6:00 and 7:00 am both days.
    Users will be able to create and submit all trade documents, but will not be able to view or update business account details or register new business accounts.
    Users are recommended to continually save their work-in-progress documents, in order to avoid the loss of any partially completed trade documents.

    • Sunday, February 18 – 4:30 to 6:00 am and 7:00 to 8:30 am ET
    Includes all incoming data and outbound messages.
    Refer to contingency procedures or be prepared to resume transmission once the system is available.

    If you have an eManifest Portal account, you can submit trade documents through the Portal during this outage, but they will be held in a queue for processing until the outage is completed.

    Highway carriers proceeding to the border during this outage should have the correct paperwork to present at arrival.
