Update 2: Vessel Impact to STS Crane at GCT Vanterm
ciffa.com
Global Container Terminals Canada provided the following update regarding yesterday’s impact of the EVER SUMMIT to a STS crane at GCT Vanterm:
We continue to have an exclusion zone established to ensure the safety of everyone at the terminal, and are supporting Transport Canada and the Transportation Safety Board in their investigations.
Observed damage to containers on the vessel includes those that were destined for Vancouver and other ports-of-call. It has been confirmed that none of the containers in question contain hazardous cargo.
Since yesterday, GCT Canada’s engineering and maintenance teams together with external engineering contractors have been working to gain a complete understanding of the incident and activate a recovery plan. At present, the EVER SUMMIT continues to be held alongside with tugs. In the early evening of January 28th, a 900 ton floating crane – The Beast – was brought in. A second 600 ton crane – the Artic Tuk – is arriving today. The floating cranes will work together to support recovery operations.
While vessel operations have ceased since the incident, GCT Vanterm rail and truck gate operations remain active. We are grateful for the collaboration of the ILWU, our supply chain partners, our neighbours, and the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority as we work toward re-establishing full operations.

Tractor Trailers Banned from Several NY and Pennsylvania Highways as Storm Blows In
ciffa.com
Hazardous travel conditions expected from heavy snow and freezing temperatures led NY Governor Andrew Cuomo to announce a ban on tractor trailers from certain highways in western and upstate NY beginning at 8 pm last night and on portions of the Interstate 81 corridor beginning today at noon.
The bans will last for the duration of the storm.
As the weather system winds down, a polar vortex moving in from the north will deliver dangerously cold wind chills continuing through Thursday. Blowing snow and freezing temperatures will result in near-blizzard conditions, authorities say.
Pennsylvania also put restrictions in place. No empty or double trailers are allowed on certain highers, and the speed limit is restricted to 45 MPH as conditions warrant.
