    AIR FREIGHT UPDATES

    Canada Extends India Travel Ban Until 21st August

    In a huge blow to thousands of travelers, Canada has extended its flight ban from India until 21st August. The decision means that the busy travel season before the beginning of college terms will be hampered. However, there remains a way to travel from India to Canada for those who wish to fly.     Air Canada Will Bring Back Strong US Transborder Network

    With the revelation that Canada is looking to reopen to fully vaccinated Americans without any quarantine, Air Canada is coming out strong and ready with added flights. The airline will operate up to 220 daily flights between the US and Canada across 55 routes and 34 destinations. Most of the routes will be back up and running in earnest by early August, and more will start come September. Read more here.


    OCEAN FREIGHT UPDATES

    Canada – Service Interruption – BC Interior Fires – Update #4

    With reference to the previous update published on July 15, 2021.
    CP Rail (CPR) and CN Rail (CNR) main lines now clear and operating. Port terminals in Vancouver resuming normal operations.
    The movement of trains currently authorized, however, wildfires in the area continue to be active. The BC Wildfire Service is monitoring the fires closely.

    CP Rail:
    CPR mainline in British Columbia near Lytton clear and operating.
    CP Edmonton – loads accepted bound to Delta Port (no empties).
    CP Calgary – No empties.
    No additional inland restrictions currently in place for intermodal traffic.

    CN Rail:
    The CNR mainline in British Columbia near Lytton clear and operating.
    Gate restrictions for intermodal traffic to Vancouver and BC South remain case by case.

    Port Terminals (Vancouver):
    Port terminals in Vancouver are resuming normal operations and working to clear backlogs caused by the rail/fire situation.
    GCT Delta Port outbound rail production has resumed and expected to reach normal production levels by the end of this week.

    MSC warns of international intermodal impacts on West and East coasts

    Ocean carrier MSC reports that U.S. freight railroads have started to reduce import rail traffic at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach as well as New York as the U.S. experiences record import volumes.
    Starting last Sunday and effective for the next two weeks, MSC rail vendor BNSF (NYSE: BRK.B) is metering inbound trains at ocean terminals at LA and Long Beach, MSC said in a Monday morning service advisory. Read more here.


    Ships back up across Covid-hit southern Vietnam

    Ships are backing up Yantian-style off southern Vietnam as Covid-19 wreaks further havoc on Asian supply chains.
    The Vietnamese government put the whole southern region into lockdown on Sunday as Covid-19 cases have soared recently. Ho Chi Minh City had already been in lockdown for a week prior with most of its terminals now severely congested. Further south, many ships are at anchor off Vung Tau, an important feeder and transhipment hub, waiting for berth space to open up. Read more here.


    Australian shippers cry foul as lines pressure forwarders to divulge client data

    Freight forwarders in Australia fear shipping major lines, including Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk subsidiary Hamburg Süd, are planning to build a database of their clients to deal with the shippers directly.
    According to one forwarder The Loadstar spoke to, some carriers are refusing to accept cargo unless the forwarder agrees to book the domestic inland trucking with the carrier, thereby providing the shipper details. Read more here (login required).

    Is double brokering legal?

    It’s complicated.
    This was a common answer among many transportation professionals asked about the legality of double brokering as part of a FreightWaves investigative series on a burgeoning double-brokering scheme.
    Brokers said that double brokering has been around since shippers started relying on brokerages to find trucks to haul their freight. Most agree that it’s legal as long as the shipper consents to the arrangement and the carrier hired to haul the load is also privy to the details and is paid. Read more here.

    Canada Revamps International COVID Travel Rules

    With the Canadian Government announcing new international COVID-19 travel rules, expectations are high among Canada’s airlines. Current border restrictions expire on Wednesday, July 21. On Monday, Canada announced it would welcome fully vaccinated travelers from all countries by September 7. Read more here.

    Prologis sees record rent growth for logistics space

    Management from logistics real estate investment trust Prologis Inc. (NYSE: PLD) on Monday raised the company’s 2021 rent growth forecast by 40 basis points to 10.3% in the U.S and by 300 bps to 8% globally.
    Rents in the U.S. were up nearly 7% in the first half of the year, which was a record. Read more here.
