Airbus Has No Whitetail Aircraft Left

Whitetail aircraft are often a worrying sign. Their ongoing existence can imply that they have been produced without a carrier in place to deploy them. Airbus had several of these at the height of the pandemic, causing concerns for the European planemaker. Nonetheless, the firm this week confirmed that there are no longer any whitetails at its facilities. Read more here.
Finnair Wants To Test IATA Travel Pass On London Heathrow Flights

Finnair has begun to trial IATA’s Travel Pass health passport solution on flights between London Heathrow Airport and its Helsinki home in Finland. The IATA Travel Pass is one of several health passport solutions launched by companies across the globe in a bid to simplify post-COVID-19 travel. Read more here.

Covid outbreak brings congestion havoc to South Vietnam ports

Port congestion in South Vietnam is deteriorating, amid the country’s latest Covid battle.
The lockdown in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) was extended for two weeks on Sunday, alongside the 19 other cities and provinces making up the entire southern region.
Saigon Newport (SNP), which operates inner-city river terminal Tan Cang Cat Lai in HCMC, told customers this morning the outbreak had “heavily disrupted” manufacturing operations. Read more here (login required).
Global liner congestion worsens, 116 ports report disruption

The port congestion pandemic has stretched around the globe with ever greater numbers of containerships idling, waiting for berth spaces to open up across five continents.
Seaexplorer, a container shipping platform created by logistics giant Kuehne+Nagel, has sent Splash a map highlighting today’s super stressed container port scene.
As of 3.20 pm Singapore time today, there were 328 ships idling in front of ports around the world with 116 ports reporting challenges, such as congestion. Read more here.
FMC Establishes Ocean Carriers Audit Program

The Federal Maritime Commission has established a new audit program and dedicated audit team to assess carrier compliance with the Agency’s rule on detention and demurrage as well as to provide additional information beneficial to the regular monitoring of the marketplace for ocean cargo services.
The “Vessel-Operating Common Carrier Audit Program” was established Monday at the direction of Chairman Daniel B. Maffei and launched immediately. Read more here.
Container shipping faces the brunt of new European emissions rules

Maritime is having to contend with the splintering of environmental regulations following last week’s proposal by the European Commission of a cap and trade system for shipping emissions. Analysis carried by Splash today shows that of the three main shipping sectors, containers will face by far the greatest impact from the Brussels directive. Read more here.
Cosco retrofits open-hatch cargo ship to carry more containers

To help overcome the shortage of containerships, Cosco Shipping Lines has retrofitted an open-hatch cargo ship belonging to affiliate Cosco Shipping Specialised Carriers.
The 62,000 dwt Cosco Shipping Honor, which originally could carry up to 473 teu, had container slots and locks installed in six cargo holds in Ningbo-Zhoushan port’s Meishan container terminal, to double its container capacity. Read more here.

Higher contract rates pull volume from spot truck market

Truck postings on the spot market began to show signs of growth in June, growing 13% compared to May. This was relatively flat on a YoY basis, increasing 0.3% YoY, according to the latest figures from DAT.
Demand remained higher than at the same point last year, with spot posts up more than 101% YoY, but posts fell 6% compared to May. DAT Principal Analyst Dean Croke said this is the result of more shipments moving to the contract market, as carriers have been able to secure higher rates there, reducing the incentive to focus on the spot market. Ontario imposes restrictions in northwest as wildfires burn

Ontario imposed new restrictions on mining, rail, construction and transportation industries in the province’s northwest on Tuesday to reduce the likelihood of human-caused wildfires.
The move came as 107 active wildfires burn in the region, with 32 of those not under control. Read more here.
