TPM22: Importers plea for early west coast labour contract talks, as uncertainty bites

US importers are getting antsy over the looming contract negotiations at west coast ports.
In a letter to the heads of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and Pacific Maritime Association (PMA), the chief of the National Retail Federation (NRF) urged both sides to commence negotiations as soon as possible and commit to constructive dialogue until a new contract is agreed. New legislation would strip ocean carrier antitrust protections

Ocean carriers would no longer enjoy their limited antitrust immunity under new legislation aimed at curbing what some lawmakers and the Biden administration consider to be out-of-control market power.
The Ocean Shipping Antitrust Enforcement Act, introduced on Monday by Rep. Jim Costa, D-Calif., would amend U.S. shipping regulations by repealing section 40307 of Title 46 of the United States Code, which protects foreign carriers from certain antitrust laws. Read more here.
