COVID boom not over yet for ‘landlords’ of shipping lines

Foreign container lines were widely blamed for stratospheric freight rates during the supply chain crisis. President Joe Biden proclaimed last June he was “viscerally angry” at the “rip-off,” clenching his fist and saying he felt like “popping someone,” presumably a foreign container-line executive.
As the shipping lines took the heat for raking in billions amid the pandemic, another group of foreign-owned container shipping companies quietly raked in record sums outside the publicity glare: the container-ship lessors, otherwise known as tonnage providers. Read more here.

Trucking groups call for action on Driver Inc.

Teamsters Canada, the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA), and the Association du camionnage du Québec (ACQ) have joined forces to call for urgent federal action to put the brakes on the growing Driver Inc. crisis in the country’s trucking sector.
The Driver Inc. sees truck drivers incorporate, often at the request of dishonest employers, under the guise of paying lower taxes and avoiding other payroll deductions. But in reality, these drivers are indistinguishable from regular employees, lacking truck ownership, route choice, or any real degree of independence or financial risk. Read more here.

Companies boasted about their artificial intelligence bona fides on the floor of the recently concluded show. The flood of emails sent to journalists covering the event, offering up interviews with executives, almost all touted the AI credentials of the companies being pitched. Read more here.
