MEA Releases Update on Negotiations with Longshoremen’s Union, Port of Montreal

The Maritime Employers Association has released an update in regard to the ongoing negotiation of the collective agreement between the Maritime Employers Association and the Longshoremen’s Union, CUPE Local 375, which expired on December 31, 2018.
The update notes that, as of April 26, 2019, and since the previous communication of April 3, there have been six mediation meetings between the MEA and the Union. Many hearings are expected in the months of May and June 2019. Two hearings took place at the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) in the month of April regarding the request to maintain essential services. Additional hearings are expected in the months of May, June and July 2019.
The CIRB has committed to rendering a decision concerning this demand in the month of September 2019. Presently, the parties do not have the right to start a strike or a lock-out.

One-Third of Yantian Express’ Cargo Owners Haven’t Paid GA Bond

Japanese carrier Ocean Network Express (ONE) is encouraging customers with cargo aboard the fire-damaged container ship Yantian Express to make sure that they pay their general average obligations. According to the carrier, though the payment deadline has long since expired, “General Average and Salvage security has still not been posted for about one third” of the containers that survived the fire. Ottawa, ON — Canada’s garbage is coming home from the Philippines.
A spokesman for Global Affairs Canada told The Canadian Press on Thursday Canada made a formal offer earlier this week to have more than six dozen containers of Canadian household trash returned to the Port of Vancouver. Read more here.
