    India Signs Open Skies Agreement With Canada

    India and Canada have inked an Open Skies agreement, greatly expanding flight rights between the two countries. Airlines will now be able to operate unlimited flights between key cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, ending the cap of 35 weekly flights.     Top 20 Cargo Airports: Leading hubs bounce back after Covid hit

    Covid lockdowns and virus-related freight surges in 2021 influenced the final ‘premier league’ table of the world’s top 20 cargo airports in 2021 (see chart at end of article).
    Global economic shocks, China’s Covid lockdowns and the war in Ukraine will similarly impact 2022’s final running order. As we enter the fourth quarter of 2022, we can take a glimpse at cargo flows so far.

    Air cargo execs more nervous over consumer pullback

    MIAMI — Air cargo airline and logistics executives have written off the traditional peak season bump in shipping business as the global economy decelerates, leaving them to speculate whether prospects will improve sometime in 2023.
    The growing pessimism, following 18 months of record-setting volumes and revenues, was underscored by International Air Transport Association data last week showing a 10.7% decrease in cargo demand in September compared to the prior year. Continued contraction in export activity, the war in Ukraine, labor shortages and inflation contributed to mid-double-digit declines in demand for Asia-Pacific, European and Middle Eastern carriers.  Read more here.

    Hapag-Lloyd appoints new Head of North America Business

    Stuart Sandlin will replace Uffe Ostergaard as President of Hapag-Lloyd’s Region North America. Sandlin, who is currently Senior Vice President (SVP) of Sales for the United States, will assume his new position on 1 January 2023, while Ostergaard will take over another management position outside of Hapag-Lloyd in the United States.  Read more here.

     

    Australia braces for chaos as Friday ports shutdown looms

    Australia faces its own ‘Ever Given’ moment with shipping – or the potential lack of it – making national headlines this week.
    The decision by towage giant Svitzer, a Maersk subsidiary, to lock out staff from Friday over a bitter three-year pay dispute, has alarmed many, with the government weighing in on the issue and calls growing to nationalise the country’s towage sector. Read more here.

    What are FMCSA’s top upcoming proposed rules?

    The U.S. Department of Transportation issued in September its latest Significant Rulemakings Report summarizing the status of such rulemakings for each of its agencies.
    “Significant rules,” according to DOT, “are essentially those that are likely to have high benefits or costs or are potentially controversial.” Significant proposed or final rules issued by a DOT agency must also be reviewed by the secretary of transportation and the Office of Management and Budget before they can be issued. Read more here.
